Shutters hung loosely, half off their hinges, from the high, three-story windows. Dull, splintered wood showed through chipped and faded paint, an old oak blanketed the moonlit yard with the seasonal shedding of its leaves, a wooden swing hung from one of its branches. I quickly regretted my choice of exam paper. An assignment on the "effects of superstitution on the human psyche" is all well and good until you're standing outside a supposedly haunted mansion where an old man and his family were brutally murdered.
